Allergy to Coconut Oil

Allergy to Coconut Oil

Coconut is considered by many to be the ultimate and healthiest food. However, coconut, just like any other food item, can be dangerous. Especially if you are allergic to it. It is not common to have an Allergy to Coconut Oil or other related products. However, it is still possible in certain cases.

The symptoms of an Allergy to Coconut Oil are similar to that of any type of allergy. They include: vomiting, hives, rashes, diarrhea and headaches. Allergic reactions upon contact with the skin are called contact dermatitis. The symptoms of this condition are mild. Usually you only get a skin rash or blisters on the skin. This only happens when you use products directly onto the skin, such as lotion, creams or even the coconut oil itself.

Coconut contains a protein that is unique. Due to this, the cases of cross contamination are limited. Cross-contamination occurs when people with an allergy experience similar symptoms towards products containing the same substance. For example, people that are allergic to nuts can experience the same symptoms towards soy products.

For food labeling purposes, the FDA classifies coconut as a tree nut. This is not technically correct. Coconut is a fruit, not a botanical nut. Therefore, people with nut allergies can safely eat coconut. Studies show that kids with nut allergies are not likely to experience symptoms from eating coconut.

If you know for sure that you have an Allergy to Coconut Oil, then you need to be careful. Always read the labels of products before purchasing a product. When buying cosmetics or creams, make sure that they do not contain any coconut oil. Although rare, some people suffer from severe symptoms towards coconut oil. These include facial swelling, increased heart rate and difficulty breathing. If this happens to you, call 911 or visit the emergency room.

All in all, an Allergy to Coconut Oil is not as common as you think. However, if you experience hives or rashes, discontinue the use of the product. Always read the labels and take care of what you buy. Safety comes first!
